Connections

2012 was our year of connections.

We connected with many other "Mito" patients who think the way we do- less is more. We connected with many other "Mito" patients who likely have Mast Cell involvement and significant history of food intolerances and allergies. EDS and Mast, SMA III, and more.

We connected the concept that food is medicine. Most medications are based on naturally occurring elements. We all absolutely accept that a peanut allergy can kill, so why not accept that the proper food can heal?

We connected the thought process that very little is known about Mito or Mast- that it will be years and years before there is a clear criteria for diagnostics and prognosis. No absolutes at least in the near future. It is going to be one day at a time for years before there are any absolutes in these fields.

We connected that no absolutes equals a ton of hope.

We connected that Abby is truly unique.

We connected that our determination to help Abby can only occur as a strong family unit.

We connected with other families like us who literally devote their lives to their children- good people.

We connected with thinking parents. Those who ask the tough questions. Those who won't stop until they have answers. Those who recognize that Drs. rarely have all the answers. These families support Drs. who "think" and celebrate their progress.

We connected with families who "get" Abby.

We connected with ourselves. We are a-okay with being stinky cheese and might just try to be even stinkier this year.

We connected to the corn allergy population who suffer the most out of any allergy group. EVERYTHING has corn, and our population of people allergic is growing daily at a staggering rate. Like Mito and Mast, corn allergies are simply an unknown turf. Many Corn allergy sufferers react to all parts of the corn not just the protein. 1000's of people are isolated, alienated because of an allergy to corn. For many with corn allergies the symptoms and impact on the body are very similar to celiac- Yet, No one is studying it. After all, in America corn is gold.

I connected that GMO is bad. Chemicals on our foods are bad. Hormones in our food is bad. I connected that natural and clean is essential to health.

I am wondering what 2013 will bring- a year of discovery? a year of health? a year of progress? a year of learning?

Last year I thought we would know for absolute a gene responsible for Abby's health challenges, we don't. Really it would help but it wouldn't change the journey.

Overall, 2012 was a hard year, but a rewarding one. Connections were made, now to build on them.

I have learnt much from you and your experiences. Thanks for sharing. Our world may not be mito. It may have a mast cell dimension-I just don't think those dots have been connected enough.
We are doing better thanks to what we have learnt this year too.
Good luck for 2013.
Jo
